Brazil reached a record in the number of probable cases of dengue, surpassing 1.8 million identifications of the disease in 2024. The value, updated by the Ministry of Health this Monday (18), is the highest in more than 20 years, and surpasses the records of the entire historical series monitored by the government, which began in the 2000s.
In absolute data, there have been 1,889,206 records that resemble dengue so far. The value is 13.89% higher than the cases recorded last year, when there were 1,658,816 cases of the disease in the country. Until this Monday’s update, the year with the most cases was 2015 – with 1,688,688 records of the disease, from January to December of that year.
The worst incidence rate occurs in the Federal District, where 157,205 cases have been identified since the beginning of the year. In comparison with the number of inhabitants, there are 5,582 cases for every 100 thousand people, the highest number in the country. Next are the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Paraná and Goiás.
The advancement of the disease has caused concern among Brazilians. Nine out of ten say they have feelings about the disease, according to research by Instituto Locomotiva and QuestionPro. The survey also shows that a significant portion of the population faced problems linked to the disease: four in ten people dealt with dengue at home. While one in four reports having been personally infected with the disease.
