On March 12th and 13th, PUCRS, in Porto Alegre, will host the 12th International Environment Forum (FIMA). This event is a joint initiative of the Riograndense Press Association (ARI), the Public Ministry of RS, the School of Communication, Arts and Design (Famecos) and the UFRGS Environmental Journalism Research Group (GPJA).
The Forum aims to provide a space to debate environmental issues from a political and social perspective, offering an opportunity for both in-depth discussions and learning. It is open to students, journalists and the general public, promoting a broad exchange of knowledge and experiences related to the environment.
The theme of the 12th International Environment Forum is “Water and Renewable Energy” and seeks to enable reflections on the forms of energy production and the use of water, mainly on topics such as green hydrogen and the production of wind energy. The implications of implementing wind turbine farms in lagoons and coastal areas will also be discussed.
The chosen theme involves two major challenges facing today’s society: preserving the quality and ecological wealth of the planet’s water and balancing the increase in energy demand with the need to preserve nature. In this way, the event promotes an in-depth discussion about the use of these resources, with the aim of seeking innovative and socially fair solutions globally and at a local level.
The Forum will be attended by several leaders and authorities on the subject in Brazil. The indigenous leader Junior Hekurari Yanomami will be one of the speakers at the event and will give the lecture “Yanomami Land: mining, humanitarian crisis and the role of journalism”. President of the Yanomami Indigenous Health District Council, Junior is an activist and denounces the humanitarian crisis in the Yanomami indigenous land, illegal mining and deforestation in the Amazon. The 1st Environmental Journalism Exhibition will also take place during the Forum.
HIM in Agenda 2030
By bringing the topic of water and renewable energy to the debate, the Forum connects the two themes with the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (UN), which are translated into the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Life in Water (goal 14) and Affordable and Clean Energy (goal 14).
The 2030 Agenda is a guide developed by the UN that works as an action plan to put the world on a more sustainable and resilient path until 2030. Companies, organizations, educational institutions are encouraged to take part in this global project and PUCRS is a of them: the University makes this commitment to social impact daily through its research, teaching, extension and innovation projects.
