An 11-year-old child was sent back home after seeking help at an emergency care unit (UPA) in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, with a cockroach in her ear, last Saturday (2/3). The patient was taken to a hospital in the region, where she was denied treatment by the regulatory center.
“They explained that the agreement [entre o hospital e a prefeitura] did not cover this type of service, she returned home”, the girl’s father told G1.
Bento Gonçalves City Hall informed Metrópoles that the girl was treated at the emergency unit, but, after numerous attempts to remove the cockroach, she was taken to a reference hospital.
“The patient, 11 years old, was treated in the 24-hour Emergency Care Unit, after a foreign body entered the ear region. After numerous attempts to remove the foreign body from the site, it was necessary to refer it to the ENT clinic, with removal being carried out the following day at the reference hospital for the specialty”, highlighted the municipal government.
According to the child’s father, the girl had slept at her grandmother’s house. At the scene, family members noticed that a cockroach had entered the little girl’s ear and took her to a UPA at around 4am.
In the patient’s medical record, the doctor reported that she tried to remove the insect, but without success, and referred the girl for evaluation by an ENT specialist.
According to the child’s father, at 11 am, the girl returned home with the dead cockroach still in her right ear.
The girl’s father also reported that, hours later, the UPA contacted the family and informed them that it would be possible to remove the insect. They were taken by ambulance to the same hospital that had previously denied the procedure.
“It took three minutes to remove the cockroach. She was relieved, because she complained a lot of pain, the cockroach was big. Now, she’s fine, she went to school today [segunda-feira, 4]”, stated the man.
