The 14th Pelotas Grape Fair, which began on February 15th and was scheduled to end on February 24th, will be extended until March 2nd due to the success achieved in the first two weeks of the event and the continued availability of fruit in local orchards.
The decision to extend the fair for another week was taken jointly by Pelotas City Hall, through the Rural Development Secretariat (SDR), Emater, Embrapa, Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel), Pelotas Family Farmers Workers Union and the farmers who produce grapes in the region. This movement aims to provide more opportunities for the direct sale of grapes from producers to consumers.
“In two weeks. 1,641 kilos of fresh grapes were sold at the Fair. As long as there are interested producers and the fruit is in the orchards, we will be encouraging direct sales to the consumer. Everyone wins with this measure. Those who produce receive a fair price and those who buy take home a high quality product. The request for an extension came from the producers and had our full support”, explains the vice-mayor and secretary of Rural Development, Idemar Barz.
In addition to fresh grapes, on the stalls at the 14th Pelotas Grape Fair it is possible to find varieties of colonial production with the fruit. From the 15th until Thursday (22nd), 302 cups of grapes, 211 bottles of juice and 89 bottles of wine, including jelly, had already been sold. The stalls will be open from 9am to 6pm in the same locations and days of the week.
