Porto Alegre is the stage for the most recent exhibition by Cristina Canale, a Brazilian artist based in Germany. “The House and the Breath” is the title of this unique exhibition, inaugurating the Ling Institute’s artistic calendar for 2024. With 22 pieces, including four never-before-seen works, the exhibition stands out for its intense colors and the fusion of anthropomorphic and botanicals. The creations, which range from oil paintings to watercolor drawings, reflect the artistic evolution of Canale, whose career spans more than three decades.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on February 27th, Tuesday, at 7pm, and will feature a meeting between the artist and curator Daniela Labra. The event is free and open to the public, who can register in advance on the Instituto Ling website. This is an unmissable opportunity for art admirers in Porto Alegre, especially considering that Canale has not had a solo exhibition in the city for over ten years.
Among the pieces on display, “White of Fear” stands out, a work from 1992, which introduces visitors to the gallery with a palette of soft colors and figures with delicate contours. In contrast, the piece “Sopro”, created in 2023, brings formal elements characteristic of the artist, composing a dialogue between her oldest and most recent works.
The exhibition, curated by Labra, explores themes such as the duality between solidity and immateriality, reflected in the title “A Casa e o Sopro”. This theme is an invitation to reflect on the vital force and transmutation, central aspects in Canale’s work. The public can enjoy the exhibition free of charge until June 1st, from Monday to Saturday, excluding holidays. Instituto Ling also offers guided tours for groups, upon prior registration.

About the Ling Institute
Created and maintained by the Ling family since 1995, the Ling Institute’s mission is to promote human development and the evolution of society through the dissemination of different forms of knowledge, freedom of thought, appreciation of culture and health. In the area of education, since the foundation, it helps young leaders to develop their intellectual and entrepreneurial potential by granting scholarships to the best institutions in the world. With the opening of its cultural center in Porto Alegre, in 2014, it expanded and solidified its operations, establishing it as a reference in the dissemination of knowledge and a provider of differentiated cultural services and products, with a high standard of quality and aesthetics.
In the health area, Instituto Ling established a partnership with Hospital Moinhos de Vento, in 2015, to implement a reference center for cancer treatment in Porto Alegre, and, in 2023, to grant scholarships for courses of nursing; and with Santa Casa de Misericórdia, in 2019, contributing to the construction of the new building of the hospital complex in Porto Alegre. The Ling family, sponsors of the institute, owns the holding company Évora. Present in 13 countries, the business group produces and sells aluminum cans for drinks, polypropylene non-woven fabrics (mainly used in the production of hygienic disposables) and closing systems for drinks and hygiene and beauty products.
