Celebrating the bicentenary of German immigration to Brazil, historian Rodrigo Trespach, in his work “1824”, brings to light the history of the construction of the German-Brazilian community. The narrative begins with the establishment of the colony in São Leopoldo, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, highlighting a crucial moment in Brazilian and German history. After Brazil’s independence in 1822, the country was in search of a national identity and political stability. At the same time, Germany, devastated by the Napoleonic Wars, was witnessing a movement of emigration.
The decision of José Bonifácio, advisor to D. Pedro I, to encourage European immigration to Brazil, especially Germans, is explored by Trespach with a detailed approach. It uses a wide range of documents, letters and historical records to present not only the political and military figures involved, but also to give voice to the artisans, farmers and peasants who crossed the Atlantic in search of a better life.
The book, divided into 22 chapters, offers a deep dive into the period of the First Kingdom, between 1822 and 1831, focusing on German immigration. More than five thousand Germans arrived in Faxinal do Courita, near Rio dos Sinos, on the outskirts of Porto Alegre, transforming the region into a successful model of the Brazilian empire’s colonization policy. German influence intertwined with Brazilian culture over two centuries, resulting today in more than five million German descendants in Brazil.
In addition to highlighting the German contribution to the agricultural and industrial development of Brazil, Trespach highlights the cultural and social impact, such as cooperativism, which emerged in Nova Petrópolis at the beginning of the 20th century. The work also addresses historical curiosities, such as the emergence of Protestantism in Brazil and Argentine plans against D. Pedro I.
This work, recommended for students, teachers and enthusiasts of Brazilian history, is not only an informative read, but an invitation to understand the richness of the German cultural heritage in Brazil. Rodrigo Trespach, specialist in the history of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and author of 17 books, including “Às margins do Ipiranga”, also published by Citadel Grupo Editorial, has established himself as a reference in historical research.
