In a diligent action carried out on Monday, February 5th, environmental authorities in São Leopoldo carried out an important intervention. The inspection team from the Municipal Environment Secretariat (Semmam) of São Leopoldo, with the essential collaboration of members of the Environmental Defense Group (GDA) Ipson Pavani and the Municipal Civil Guard (GCM), identified a serious case of illegal dumping. This incident occurred in an area designated for environmental preservation, located on Rua Portão, in the Rio dos Sinos neighborhood.
During this operation, the person responsible for the illicit act was identified, who was immediately detained and taken to the city’s 2nd Emergency Police Station (DPPA). The vehicle used for the illegal action was seized and will only be returned after payment of a stipulated fine.
João Chaves, who heads Semmam’s Environmental Monitoring Department, highlighted that the site was already under surveillance due to several complaints made by local residents. The action was a direct result of this continued surveillance and reports from concerned citizens.
Agents GDA Ferreira and Da Rosa, together with João Chaves, played fundamental roles in this operation, demonstrating the commitment of local authorities to preserving the environment.
Environmental risks from construction and demolition debris
The irregular disposal of debris from construction or demolition presents serious risks to the environment, mainly due to potential contamination by chemicals and year pesados. A classic example is lead, often found in old paint. This heavy metal, when released into the environment, can cause significant damage to human health and the ecosystem.
Soil and groundwater contamination is a primary concern. The heavy metals and chemicals present in these debris can infiltrate the soil, reaching groundwater and affecting water quality. Furthermore, when these materials are left exposed, they can release toxic particles and vapors, contaminating the air and posing a risk to respiratory health.
It is essential that there is adequate management of this waste, with effective recycling and safe disposal policies, to minimize the environmental impact and preserve public health. Raising awareness about the dangers of inappropriate disposal and promoting sustainable practices are essential steps to ensuring a safer and healthier environment for future generations.
