This Wednesday (31), the Roraima Civil Police found an unoccupied house in Boa Vista, capital of Roraima, full of expired medicines intended for the Yanomami indigenous people.
The case was referred to the Federal Police.
An investigation by the Narcotics Repression Police Station (DRE) and the Narcotics Department (DENARC) aimed at accusations of drug trafficking in the São Francisco neighborhood, according to the police, resulted in the discovery of the unoccupied house where the medicines were found.
“When the DRE police officers came across these medications, they contacted the DRCAP team. When searching the location, we found that the medicines were intended for the Yanomami DSEI. There were many boxes, with various medicines, many expired since 2021. Therefore, we understood that it was not the responsibility of the Civil Police and we called the Federal Police”, declared delegate Magnólia Soares, responsible for the Police Station for the Repression of Crimes against Public Administration (DRCAP ).
Ministry of Health blames Bolsonaro government
The Ministry of Health, through the Secretariat of Indigenous Health (SESAI), expressed in a statement its rejection of the disposal of medicines. According to the ministry, these medicines “should have been destined for the Yanomami indigenous people and expired during the past administration”, a reference to the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The Ministry stated that it will assist in the investigations, providing all required information. The statement also highlights that the institution is committed “to strengthening measures and actions for the restructuring of Indigenous Health Districts”, with the aim of resuming support for the Yanomami, after “years of abandonment and dismantling of indigenous health”.
