The “Castra Ação” initiative, promoted by the City of Estância Velha, held its first edition on Thursday, January 18, resulting in 101 animals (dogs and cats) being castrated. The Department of Security, Sports and Wellbeing (SESEBE) organized the campaign, which covered several neighborhoods and locations in the city.
The initiative aims to control the population of dogs and cats in the city, in addition to promoting the health and longevity of these animals. “This initiative is crucial for the city, as it provides a better quality of life for many families and their pets,” said José Dresch, secretary of SESEBE.
In the Encosta do Sol neighborhood, in the Veneza subdivision, Clínica Primavera carried out examinations on registered animals before scheduling their castrations. “In my view, this initiative is excellent, especially for those who cannot afford it. This is the second time that I am neutering my animals through City Hall,” said Márcia Ulmi, a resident of Lago Azul, who took her dog Mel for the exam.
Other clinics opted for a different strategy, transporting animals for neutering on the same day and returning them to their families the following day (January 19). The initiative was also carried out at PAC, in the Sol Nascente, União and Rincão Gaúcho neighborhoods.
Chipping
All dogs and cats that are neutered by the City Hall will receive a “pet microchip” during surgery. The device, the size of a grain of rice, stores information about the animal, such as name, species, sex, color, age, breed and even owner data.
The chip is useful in cases of animal loss, allowing a clinic or NGO to get in touch. The same applies to cases of abandonment, where it is possible to identify who committed the act. It is important to note that the chip does not perform real-time tracking, it only serves as an identifier.
Right to castration and how to request it
To request castration, you must contact the Animal Cause Department by phone (51) 99673-8654. The department carries out an assessment to determine whether the applicant meets the criteria, which are: low-income families with mixed-breed animals and adopters from the Adoption Fair, which takes place every Saturday at Praça Leonel Brizola, in the Center.
