Brazilian Beatriz Haddad, current number 11 in the world, won her debut match at the Australian Open, in Melbourne, this Monday (15). She defeated Czech Linda Fruhvirtova (85th in the WTA rankings) by 2 sets to 1 (6/2, 3/6 and 6/2), in 2h18 of the match. Before the second round of the singles bracket, Bia debuts in the doubles at 1:30 am this Tuesday (16) – Brasília time –, alongside North American Taylor Townsend, with whom she was champion last week at the WTA 500 in Adelaide, also in Australia.
Her opponent will be 16-year-old Russian Alina Korneeva (180th), who reached the main stage of the Australian Grand Slam through qualifying, in which she defeated Spain’s Sara Sorribes (33rd).
In doubles, in the early hours of this Tuesday (16), Bia and Townsend will face the debut of the partnership between Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova and Chinese Xu Yifan.
Too many Brazilians
On Sunday (14), Thiago Wild (7th in the ATP rankings) narrowly missed out on advancing to the second round. After losing by 2 sets to 0 (7/5 and 6/4), Wild recovered and tied the game (3/6 and 4/6), taking the decision to a tie-break. However, he missed qualifying by losing the deciding set 7/6, and said goodbye to the Grand Slam singles draw.
The Paraná native returns to the court at 9pm this Tuesday (16th) to debut in the doubles alongside Colombian Nicolas Barrientos.
Brazil also has five other representatives in the doubles bracket, whose debuts will take place at 1:30 am this Tuesday (16). They are: Rafael Matos, Ingrid Martins, Luisa Stefani, Marcelo Demoliner and Marcelo Melo
