São Leopoldo’s consumer protection body, Procon, recently released updated prices for the basic food basket for the month of January. The survey, carried out in the second week of the month, shows that the lowest cost found was R$646.84, which indicates a slight drop of 0.35% compared to the month of December.
The research revealed that some products had a significant reduction in their prices. Powdered soap, for example, saw a significant drop of 44% in its price. Chilled chicken and onions also saw big drops, both with a 43% price reduction. However, not all products followed this downward trend. Some products, such as potatoes, had a considerable increase of 125% in their price. Banana and soybean oil also saw significant increases, with increases of 61% and 28%, respectively.
Procon is keen to emphasize that the prices indicated in the survey are those that were being charged on the date the survey was carried out. Therefore, it is possible that there will be variations in prices throughout the month, depending on the stock availability of products, among other factors.
The Procon survey consists of 27 items, which include food, personal hygiene and cleaning products, in quantities suitable for family consumption.
