O State Department of Culturein partnership with the City of Caxias do Sul and the Division of Art and Popular Culture of the Municipal Department of Culture, is organizing the Caxias do Sul Carnival 2024. The festivities will take place on February 9th, on Rua Plácido de Castro, starting at 7pm, in front of the Maesa building. The event will be attended by the Associação Cultural e Esportiva Acadêmicos
This year’s carnival is made up of a variety of activities that include the parade, educational actions through four workshops, and pre- and post-carnival events (Enterro dos Ossos) in the communities that are supported by the project. The workshops will be held in each community of the participating groups, which have identified the main need to start a training process.
The main goal is the resumption of Carnival in Caxias do Sul, with the participation of communities from different areas of the city, with the aim of valuing, promoting and giving visibility to expressions of popular culture and cultural diversity. The initiative values artists from the communities, providing the opportunity to perform at a major Brazilian popular culture event, with adequate infrastructure and a very symbolic location in the city, open to the public and completely free.
The Municipal Department of Culture began a process of resuming carnival in Caxias do Sul, where the Division of Art and Popular Culture organized the “Encontro de Bambas” in March 2023, bringing together members of municipal schools on Rua Plácido de Castro , with drums, sambas, tributes and intense mobilization between schools. Last November, the artistic exhibition “História de Bambas” was organized at the Municipal Museum, which was part of the Black Culture Season program, bringing together materials that mark the history of carnival in the city.
The Caxias do Sul Carnival 2024 is the result of co-investment by the Culture Support Fund – FAC-RS, Secretariat of Culture – Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Notice 03/2023 – Public Call for Co-investment – Events Popular Cultures of SEDAC), where the State and the Municipality invest resources to enhance actions foreseen in the calendar. The event has the support of the Union of Neighborhood Associations of Caxias do Sul (UAB), the Association of Friends of Maesa (AMaesa) and the Samba Institute.
