A meeting of cultures and religions marked the official opening of the celebrations of the Bicentenary of German Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul. The inter-religious ceremony, held on Sunday (7/1), at the Martin Luther Church, in Porto Alegre, brought together leaders from different beliefs, as well as civil and diplomatic authorities.
The religious alignment, proposed by the Rio Grande do Sul Interreligious Coexistence Forum (Convir-RS) in partnership with the Porto Alegre Interreligious Dialogue Group (Dirpoa), enabled the participation of representatives of Catholicism, Lutheranism, Judaism , spiritualism, Afro-Brazilian religions and other currents.
For the president of the Official Bicentennial Commission and undersecretary of Justice and Institutional Integrity of the Secretariat of Justice, Citizenship and Human Rights (SJCDH), Rafael Gessinger, the format of the ceremony carries with it an important symbolism.
“What is at stake in the Bicentenary is also the knowledge of our own history and identity, but with our eyes directed to the present and the future, in a rich and lively reflection”, he said. “Migration is a universal and deeply human phenomenon, we must welcome migrants and value them, as Rio Grande do Sul is a land of cultural encounters.”
During the ceremony, religious leaders performed a blessing together, asking for protection and prosperity for the State and German communities. Afterwards, researcher Martin Dreher spoke about the history of immigration of German-speaking people.
Dreher contextualized the period that involved suffering and hope in the search for a prosperous and safe life. He highlighted the importance of German immigration for the development of Rio Grande do Sul, highlighting the contributions in the areas of agriculture, industry, culture and education.
The ceremony was attended by the Consul General of Germany, Marc Bogdahn, and the Consul General of Italy, Valerio Caruso. They highlighted the importance of relations between Rio Grande do Sul and the countries of origin of German immigrants.
The celebrations of the Bicentenary of German Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul will last until the end of 2024. Throughout the year, several events will be held across the State honoring German communities.
BICENTENARY OF GERMAN IMMIGRATION
The year 2024 is the year of the BICENTENARY OF GERMAN IMMIGRATION in Brazil, which will have as its highlight the 25th of July, as on this date, in 1824, the first German-speaking immigrants arrived in São Leopoldo. From then on, Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil received numerous waves of immigrants who helped to forge our State and our country.
Sensitive to the importance of the issue, Governor Eduardo Leite established an Official Commission responsible for organizing celebrations at the state level. Thus, the Decree 56,110/2021amended by Decree 57,020/2023brought together several State Secretariats and invited dozens of important institutions to, in a dynamic and integrated process, reflect on the contribution of migrants in the past, present and future, as well as design events and actions that can honor immigration and benefit the entire society.
According to Decree 56,110/2021, the festivities will be celebrated until the end of 2024, that is, the entire year 2024 is the year of the Bicentenary, from January 1st to December 31st.
There are many fronts and issues linked to the Bicentenary of German Immigration. To try to reflect some of this richness and complexity, the following subcommittees were installed:
- Citizenship and Human Rights Subcommittee
- Science and Innovation Subcommittee
- Economic Development Subcommittee
- Schools Subcommittee
- Exhibitions Subcommittee
- Faith and Social Actions Subcommittee
- Folklore Subcommittee
- Subcommittee History of German Immigration
- German Language Subcommittee
- Tourism and Sport Subcommittee
In addition to these, the Friends of the Bicentennial Subcommittee was also established, dedicated to integrating the migrants who arrive in Rio Grande today and all those who want to get closer to the process, in a harmony of deep integration and fraternity. Also a curation for classical music is being organized with the valuable support of OSPA.
