Kauan Rosa, 20 years old, was born for the second time in December last year. With cancer, the law student received a bone marrow transplant. The medical discharge came on Thursday (4), when the young man celebrated his new life.
The procedure performed by Kauan is different from the conventional one in similar clinical conditions. The young man underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant.
Autologous bone marrow transplantation is when the patient’s own stem cells are removed before more invasive treatment procedures, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy. After removal, the cells are stored and then used.
From hospitalization to medical discharge
Hospitalized since November 30 last year, Kauan celebrated his discharge and recalled the importance of family in getting through this whirlwind of feelings.
“It took a long time for us to discover lymphoma, from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis, it took about six months. I felt a fever, but the blood tests were normal, then after an imaging test and a biopsy, I discovered the lymphoma, and then we started treatment with chemotherapy. I was immunosuppressed, my immunity was low. My father, my mother, my grandmothers, were very important for me to get here.”
Kauan, who lives in Dourados, was diagnosed just over a year ago with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, responsible for the production of immunity cells.
Without dropping out of law school, Kauan remained on the course he dreamed of throughout his treatment. “I didn’t want to leave my college, I went when I could, I made an agreement with the coordinators and professors, when I was better, I took exams, presented seminars, but at no point did I consider leaving my college, it’s no coincidence that I passed and I’m now going to the third year.”
For the hematologist and head of the bone marrow transplant sector at Hospital Cassems de Campo Grande, Soraya Romanini, the patient’s good mood during hospitalization contributed greatly to the successful “take” of the marrow.
“All the chemotherapy treatment he had previously undergone had not had the necessary effect for him to have the desired cure, so he had to undergo an autologous bone marrow transplant and luckily everything went well. Today he had his bone marrow confirmed and is being discharged from hospital. Kauan was a patient who really captivated us, due to the good mood he had during the treatment, helping to make everything work out. A young boy, but with a lot of wisdom, active, very optimistic and was a great partner for the entire team in carrying out the transplant.”
