A joint action by the Environmental Inspection of the Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development and the Environment (SMDEMA) and the Environmental Patrol of the Military Brigade (PATRAM) carried out this Thursday (21), resulted in the seizure of wild birds in the São José neighborhood. they were kept in captivity, without due environmental authorization.
The Military Brigade Environmental Patrol (PATRAM) received reports of crimes at two addresses in the same neighborhood. When heading to the location, they requested assistance from Environmental Inspection, to ensure adequate care for the birds.
Upon arriving at the addresses, they inspected reports about dogs, which were also in ill-treatment conditions, but which did not contain any irregularities. However, species of wild birds kept in captivity were observed.
While inspecting the second address, the teams also observed wild birds in a neighboring residence, which had not been reported. When they arrived at the location, they also found, once again, the same animals in captivity and irregular breeding without environmental authorization. In total, six birds were seized, including a Cardinal, four Earth Canaries and a Azulão. All in their respective cages.
Irregular breeders may receive fines ranging from R$500 to R$5,000, amounts that vary due to requirements such as species, the bird’s history and the bird’s risk of extinction. At each of the inspected addresses, the birds were seized and those responsible for illegal breeding sites will be held liable for an environmental crime for keeping wild animals in captivity, in accordance with Federal Law No. 9,605/1998.
