Three professors from the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) were elected to join the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) in 2024. Professors Antonio Costa de Oliveira, Luciana Tovo Rodrigues and Cristiane Luchese are recognized for their contributions in the areas of Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences and Biological Sciences, respectively.
The election of the three teachers was announced by ABC on December 4th. Teachers will receive their diplomas in May 2024, during the ABC Magna Meeting, to be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Antonio Costa de Oliveira
Antonio Costa de Oliveira is a professor at the Department of Phytotechnics at UFPel. With more than 35 years of experience in the field of genetics, he is recognized for his work in sequencing the rice genome. The project, which included the participation of researchers from 12 countries, produced a “gold standard” standard sequence that was applied, from rice, to other cereals, contributing to a better quality of nutrients present in Brazilian cereals.
Luciana Tovo Rodrigues
Luciana Tovo Rodrigues is a professor at the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at UFPel. With more than 15 years of experience in the health sector, she is recognized for her studies on biological and genetic factors of psychiatric disorders and issues related to sleep. The professor is also the winner of the Women in Science award, granted by L’Oréal in partnership with UNESCO e a ABC.
Cristiane Luchese
Cristiane Luchese is a professor at the Department of Pharmacy and Biochemistry at UFPel. With more than 15 years of experience in the field of biochemistry, she is recognized for her studies on neurodegenerative diseases, toxicity and pharmacology of bioactive molecules. The professor is also coordinator of the Biochemical Pharmacology Research Laboratory (LaFarBio) at UFPel.
The election of the three professors is an important recognition for UFPel and for Brazilian science. Teachers represent a diversity of areas of knowledge and play a fundamental role in the development of science and technology in the country.
