Nathali Haydee Cunha, a patient who died in a health unit in Águas Lindas de Goiás, on the outskirts of the Federal District, is described by friends and family as “a companion wife, an exemplary mother”, as well as a very happy person and advisor. Her husband, professor Jhader de Melo Montalvão, accuses doctor Pablo Henrique of negligence and ended up attacking the professional. The doctor said there was no negligence in care and treatment.
On social media, Jhader said that one of the things Nathali liked most was being in church. The couple are Jehovah’s Witnesses and shared many photos in moments of faith.
In photo posts, the couple exchanged declarations of love. In a photo of the two together with a frame decorated with flowers, Jhader wrote: “Always great to be by your side, I love you, my beauty.” In the comment, she replies: “I love you, my black man”.
Dedication to her family was one of Nathali’s outstanding points. In addition to being her husband’s lawyer, Fábio Cavalcanti was also a close friend of the family.
“She was a happy person, an excellent mother. The family even said that she was the foundation of the family, everyone turned to her for advice,” she said.
Nathali worked as a teacher for 11 years in schools in Goiás and the Federal District. For the past two years, she has been teaching private lessons at home.
The teacher leaves behind a husband and two children, an 11-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. Her death is being investigated by the Civil Police.
Understand the case
Nathali sought out the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Setor Mansões Odisséia on December 6, with body pain. A doctor attended to the woman and asked for a dengue test, as the symptoms seemed similar to the disease.
Even with a negative test for the disease, the doctor who treated the teacher said that the diagnosis was dengue, as all the symptoms matched. He then gave her some medication to take at home.
Without improving, Nathali returned four days later. She was attended to by doctor Pablo Henrique.
During the assessment, the professional understood that the patient was not that weak and, therefore, only sent her to take two saline bags. However, her condition worsened.
“The husband went to the doctor and said: ‘Doctor, the situation is worse, my wife feels like her body is getting cold, she’s turning pale. She said she doesn’t want to die, she said she feels like she’s dying, she does something’. But the doctor said: ‘no, I have to wait for the serum to finish’”, narrated the family’s lawyer.
A while later, Jhader went looking for Pablo again, but couldn’t find him. “So, a nursing professor saw the situation and said: ‘this woman doesn’t have to be here, she has to be in the red room, she is dying, she has to do something, she can’t be here’. The answer was that the responsible doctor was coming and he was the one who had to take care of it”, stated the lawyer.
When Pablo returned to the UPA, he was informed about Nathali’s situation. The patient, according to her husband, was screaming in pain, struggling and forcibly removing the medication from her arm, in an attempt to stop the pain. That’s when the doctor shouted at the woman, asking her to shut up.
“The wife began to debate in the living room, kicking and screaming in pain. At that moment, the doctor said: ‘you better shut up, all this pain is not for that’”, said the lawyer.
Nathali began to faint and was taken to an emergency room, called the “Red Room”. According to the lawyer, after a while, another doctor returned from there and informed Jhader of the woman’s death.
Aggression
According to the incident report registered by the Military Police, the attack against the doctor took place on Monday afternoon (11), the same day that Nathali died.
The patient’s husband confessed to the police that he was nervous about the news of his wife’s death and, therefore, invaded the doctor’s office to attack him.
A forensic examination found that the doctor had a three-centimeter wound on one of his eyelids caused by the punches.
The two were taken to the Águas Lindas de Goiás Police Station, where a Detailed Occurrence Statement (TCO) was drawn up against Jhader for the crime of bodily harm.
