Santa Maria hosts the finals of the 46th Rio Grande do Sul Intermunicipal Games (Jirgs) this Saturday (16) and Sunday (17). The modalities played are basketball, futsal, handball and volleyball, for women and men. The games start at 9am on the city’s main sports courts. Entry is free.
The event is promoted by the State Department of Sport and Leisure. Each municipality is represented by a delegation and, in total, the 2023 Jirgs should bring together around 930 athletes from Santa Maria, Canoas, Campo Bom, Caxias do Sul, Guaporé, Itaqui, Novo Hamburgo, Passo Fundo, Pelotas, Rio Grande, Santa Cruz do Sul and Uruguaiana.
Competitions take place in six spaces. Sest/Senat and the Physical Education and Sports Center (CEFD) of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) host handball, while the Municipal Sports Center (CDM) hosts futsal competitions. Clube Recreativo Dores hosts volleyball; and Colégio Metodista Centenário and Corintians Atlético Clube host basketball matches.
Jirgs
Held for the first time in 1967, the Jirgs are one of the most traditional multi-sport competitions in the State. The objective of the competition is to promote integration between municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, mobilizing cities in favor of high-performance sports. The Municipality’s Department of Sports and Leisure is responsible for organizing the games. The State government will pay for accommodation and food for visiting delegations, as well as food for local teams.
