The Independência Hospital, located in the Agronomia neighborhood, in Porto Alegre, was hit by a fire on Monday night (11). The fire started in the building attached to the main one, which houses hospitalization units 4 and 5. There are no injuries.
According to the Municipal Health Department, 58 people, including patients and staff, left the site. Some of the patients, who were on stretchers, were still placed in beds on public roads until it was possible to safely return to the unaffected areas of the hospital.
Inside the main building there were five patients who were intubated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The place was not at risk of fire and removing patients could put them at risk.
The patients were monitored by medical teams. The Municipal Health Department announced that the municipality’s regulatory center was mobilized to provide vacancies.
Patients were sent to Vila Nova, Conceição, Presidente Vargas, São Lucas, Divina Providência and UPA Moacyr Scliar hospitals. More critical cases were relocated to Cristo Redentor, Santa Casa and HPS.
The Fire Department controlled the fire in around 1 hour. The causes of the fire are still unclear. Reports from people at the scene indicate that the fire had started in the ceiling.
According to the hospital director, Angelo Chaves, the Fire Prevention Plan (PPCI) at Independência Hospital is up to date. Operating room service should not be affected.
