The government of Rio de Janeiro sanctioned, this Wednesday (Dec 6), a state policy of free provision of medicines based on cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) through the Unified Health System (SUS).
People who do not have the financial means to cover the costs of treatments will have access to the medicines. The patient must present the medical prescription, accompanied by a report, stating that other treatments have been tested and that cannabidiol is the best alternative.
Currently, 12 types of diseases are authorized by Anvisa for the treatment of cannabis-based medicines. The medicines are all imported, as production in the country remains prohibited.
The treatment period must be indicated by the medical prescription and the report, and must be reevaluated every six months.
