A 70-year-old woman gave birth to twins, this Wednesday (29), in Uganda. According to the hospital, she underwent in vitro fertilization treatment.
During a cesarean section, Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a boy and a girl. According to local media, she is one of the oldest women to have babies.
The hospital said the birth of the twins is more than a “medical success: it is about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”
“We have achieved the extraordinary: the oldest mother in Africa to give birth to twins, aged 70!”, published the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center (WHI&FC) on Facebook.
Safina Namukwaya told the Daily Monitor newspaper that her partner abandoned her at the hospital when he found out she was expecting twins.
“Since I was admitted here, my man has never appeared again”, she reported. “I took care of people’s children and watched them grow up and leave me alone. I wondered who would take care of me when I got older,” she added.
