The Federal Court of Paraná granted a discount on the Student Financing Fund (FIES) debt of a doctor, graduated from a private university, who worked in the Unified Health System (SUS) during the Covid-19 emergency.
Federal judge José Jácomo Gimenes, from the 1st Federal Court of Maringá, highlights in his decision the right to debt relief for health professionals who worked at SUS during the pandemic period.
The doctor claimed in the action that he worked in the public network for 25 months during the Covid-19 pandemic and requested a deduction of the installments for that period. The judge understood that a 1% discount was applicable for each month the professional worked in the SUS.
Article 6B of Law no. 10,260/2001, which deals with FIES, provides for a 1% discount, monthly, for some professional categories. In addition to doctors, teachers who work in the public network for at least 20 hours a week can benefit from this discount.
