The Brazilian team lost to Argentina 1-0 at Maracanã, on Tuesday night (21), in the sixth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. It was Brazil’s third consecutive defeat in the qualifiers, and the first in home in the history of the competition.
With the result, Brazil fell to sixth place in the standings, with seven points. Argentina, in turn, remains in the lead with 15 points.
In the first half, Brazil and Argentina played a balanced game, with few clear chances to score. The best opportunity came from Brazil, in the 43rd minute, with a shot by Gabriel Martinelli from the edge of the area.
In the second stage, Argentina opened the scoring in the 17th minute. During a corner kick, Otamendi rose higher than the Brazilian defense and headed the ball into the back of the net with precision.
Brazil still tried to seek a draw, but ended up being one less in the 36th minute. Joelinton was sent off after sharing the ball with De Paul and the referee understood that the Brazilian hit the Argentine in the face.
The defeat was received with dissatisfaction by the Brazilian fans, who chanted “shameless team” at the end of the match.
Game analysis
Brazil started the game with an offensive posture, trying to pressure Argentina in its defense. However, the Argentine team defended well and did not give Brazil clear chances to score.
In the second half, Argentina managed to open the scoring with a set piece. Otamendi’s goal was a heavy blow for Brazil, who saw their situation become even more complicated with Joelinton’s expulsion.
