A family from Sorocaba (SP) is mourning the death of a baby and is demanding answers after visiting three hospital units in the city to help the child who was experiencing a severe vomiting attack.
Thais Alves Senne Bernardo, mother of 10-month-old Mikaella Eloá, told g1 that she spent time in an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and a Pre-Hospital Unit (UPH) in the city, but returned home with her daughter. It was only after the third visit to another UPH, and an allergic reaction in the child, that the family was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Sorocaba City Hall reported that the cause of death is being investigated by the Death Verification Service (see the note below).
Thais says that, on Sunday (12), her daughter was taken to the Éden UPA after the symptom. According to the mother, doctors sent her home after receiving an injection, without telling her the cause of her symptoms. “They didn’t tell me anything. They just administered the medicine and sent me home,” she says.
Without any improvement, Thaís took her daughter to the UPH in the West Zone the next day. There, Mikaella was diagnosed with an inflammation of the throat, treated with a prescription of dipyrone with bromopride, medicines that caused an allergic reaction in the girl’s body.
“The doctor didn’t even leave my daughter under observation after applying the medicine. The least they could have done was ask about allergies or get tested. Soon after, parts of her body started to turn purple and her eyes were very sunken. I was desperate”, reports Thais.
It gets worse in the case
With the condition getting worse, the family took the baby to another health unit on the same day, the UPH in the North Zone. This time, professionals identified what was happening: Mikaella had cystic fibrosis, a serious genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.
When she was found extremely dehydrated and breathing weakly, doctors placed her directly in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Soon, the doctors got a place in the Childhood Cancer Research and Assistance Group (GPACI), however, Mikaella did not survive and died before the transfer.
“When I received the news, I was floored. I cried a lot. To this day I still can’t understand what went wrong along the way. I can’t believe I lost my daughter because of a mistake”, says the mother.
“I want justice. Not only for Mikaella, but also so that this type of situation does not happen to any other child in the future. It’s unforgivable.”
Sorocaba City Hall stated that, “according to the medical report, the child was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. During the crisis episode, Mikaella received care at two UPHs, Oeste and Norte, in a state of emergency on the second. When she was admitted with an acute respiratory condition, she did not survive. The cause of death is being investigated by the Death Verification Service (SVO).”
