O Black conscience day is the starting point for the exhibition “For more black bodies on screen”, which will be on display between November 20th and December 1st in Sala Redenção. The program seeks to highlight the plurality of manifestations of Afro-Brazilian culture, highlighting different experiences, experiences, trajectories and artistic processes.
In partnership with the Center for African, Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies (Neabi) at UFRGS, the Redemption Room promotes two commented sessions, addressing the theme of quilombola communities. On Tuesday, November 21st, at 4pm, there will be a screening of “Eu, nos…elas quilombolas”, followed by a chat with professionals from the areas of Public Health and Rural Development, as well as the documentary’s production team . On Wednesday, the 22nd, at the same time, the short film “Quilombo da Família Silva” will be shown, accompanied by comments from the film’s director Sérgio Valentim and representatives of quilombos from Porto Alegre.
To celebrate the events held by and for black people, the exhibition also presents the award-winning productions in the last edition of the Black in Action Film Festival. The program brings together the winning productions in the Feature Film (“Genocide and movement”), Music Video ( “Dorme Pretinho” – Lia de Itamaracá), Short Film (“Seeking black bixas”) and Videoarte (“Hiatos”).
“For more black bodies on screen” also features screenings of “Sabotage: maestro do Canão”, a documentary about one of the most important names in national rap, and “Caixa preta”, an essay film that promotes a sensorial experience through “ Latin America”. Finally, Sala Redenção hosts a session dedicated to the exhibition’s curator Nicolas Medeiros Collar. Videomaker artist Nicolas is part of the production team for the two short films shown at the session: “DesAmor” and “Feijoada Turmalina”.
All sessions have free entry, without the need to collect tickets in advance, and the Redenção Room is located on the UFRGS Center Campus, with closest access via Rua Engenheiro Luiz Englert, 333.

TOURMALINE BEANS

Documentary that addresses the artistic residency process of six young black artists who reside in Porto Alegre and the Metropolitan Region. The experience of around ten months provided by Coletivo Turmalina and financed by the Natura Musical 2021 Public Notice offered musical production, mixing, audiovisual and executive production workshops.

In Brazil, given the omission of the federal government, based on necropolitics and denialism, the lack of information led quilombola communities to take responsibility for creating lists of those eligible to receive the vaccine. The documentary gives visibility to women who, driven by ancestry, memories and relationships, combine courage and affection to overcome the challenge.
