The 69th Porto Alegre Book Fair, which recently ended at Praça da Alfândega, was a great success, according to the organizers. The event not only resulted in the sale of books, but also promoted the meeting of hundreds of writers with the public, encouraged the creation of new readers and sparked discussions about financing cultural events in the state.
This year, a total of 211,619 books were sold at the 75 newsstands, which represents an average of 2,899 books sold per day at each newsstand. Despite a reduction of around 6% compared to 2022, the organization celebrates the result. “We had many days of heavy rain, which affected sales, but the public still came to the stands. The Fair was a success”, says Maximiliano Ledur, president of the Rio-Grandense Book Chamber.
This year’s Fair stood out for unifying the opening hours of the stalls in the general, children’s and youth areas, which opened at 10am every day and closed at 8pm. In total, the Fair held 158 events, including debate tables, artistic presentations and writing and literature workshops. Almost 500 authors participated in these activities, including a strong presence of international writers.
The children’s and youth area featured 619 activities, which included storytelling, conversation circles at the Accessibility Station and training of reading mediators. The program attracted 8,720 students, from more than 300 school classes.
Another highlight this year was the participation of municipalities in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region. Students from Cachoeirinha, Canoas and Esteio were present, as well as students from Morro Reuter and Rolante.
The autograph sessions were also impressive, with 655 scheduled meetings, 49 of which were collective meetings held on the first floor of the Memorial do RS auditorium, and 606 individual meetings, which took place at the Gerdau Autograph Square.
