In eight days, Piracicaba surpasses the number of Covid cases from October and demand for tests increases 298%

In eight days of November, Piracicaba (SP) recorded more cases of Covid-19 than the entire month of October. Furthermore, testing for the disease also increased by 298% this month, according to a survey by the Department of Health carried out at the request of g1. Understand the epidemiological situation in the city below.

According to Health data, from November 1st to 8th, 119 positive cases of Covid-19 were registered, a number that already exceeds the entire month of October, when there were 115 confirmations.

Partial data, however, shows a reduction in deaths from the disease, from three to one between one month and the next.

In a note, the Department of Health reported that the increase from November onwards is a trend of the disease. “Fortunately, despite this increase observed, the number of cases is much lower than in recent years, as is the severity of the cases.”

In relation to the tests carried out, the numbers indicate a significant increase in demand by the population. While in October there were 419, in eight days of November there were 1,668.

With this increase, the percentage of positives among the tests carried out also fell, which means that More people are getting tested, but many of them do not actually have Covid-19. See the table below.

Low vaccine adherence

Among the recommendations to protect yourself against Covid-19 currently, the main one is to take booster doses of the vaccine, especially the bivalent one, which offers coverage against the variant currently circulating in the city, the ômicron.

However, despite the availability of doses, coverage in Piracicaba does not reach 20% and is even below the state average, which is currently 25%.

According to data from the Vacinometer, from the Government of São Paulo, until Friday (10), 60,349 doses of the bivalent were applied, which represents a coverage of 18.89%. This vaccine is available to all people aged 18 or over who have already completed at least the basic vaccination schedule (1st and 2nd dose).

Coverage in the population over 60 years of age is improving, but is still well below ideal and does not reach 50%. The age group most vaccinated with the bivalent vaccine is 75 to 79 years old, according to the SP government, with 46.5% coverage.

Understand the rise

According to the director of DRS 10, Moisés Taglieta, in an interview with g1 last week, the current increase in cases was already expected for the period.

“There really is an increase in cases, like every year at this time, starting in September. Every year since the start of the pandemic this has proven to be a constant. However, this increase is more discreet than we have had in other years,” he said.

Moisés also explains that, despite this increase, the disease has been milder. “The picture that appears today is a picture with much less alert than it used to be. It has a less serious characteristic.”

Taglieta also states that the variant currently circulating is the ômicron, which is already characterized by a milder illness, so there is no evidence of a major impact from this new wave. “Severity tends to decrease more and more.”
