The 69th edition of the Porto Alegre Book Fair begins this Friday (27th), one of the most traditional cultural events in the State. Until November 15th, the public will be able to attend the event from 10am to 8pm, at Praça da Alfândega, with a vast program for all ages. Among the highlights of this edition – whose patron is the writer and filmmaker Tabajara Ruas – are activities that address social inclusion and sustainability.
Antiracism
The attractions with an anti-racist theme will begin on October 28th, with a round table on black literature: tradition and influence, with Luiz Maurício Azevedo and Fernanda Bastos, in the Rio Grande do Sul Memorial auditorium, starting at 6pm. Journalist and writer Luciana Barreto will launch her book Hate speech against black people on social media on November 4th, at the Barbosa Lessa Auditorium – Espaço Força e Luz – (Rua dos Andradas, 1223), starting at 5:30 pm.
Diversity
Regarding diversity, the public will have access to workshops, lectures and soirees between October 28th and November 14th. One of the highlights will take place in the auditorium of Memorial do RS, where the collection of articles New frontiers of LGBTI+ stories in Brazil, by Augusta da Silveira de Oliveira, Lauri Miranda Silva and Paulo Souto Maior, will be launched, starting at 5pm on November 5th .
Sustainability
This year’s Fair will discuss sustainability and the environment through seminars. One of them will take place on November 8th, starting at 3pm, at the Barbosa Lessa Auditorium, with the theme “Diversity sustains the future — Homage to Paulo Kageyama. Biodiversity as a living complexity: facing asymmetries in the decisive decade”, with Luiz Marques, Raquel Kubeo, Leonardo Melgarejo and José Renato Barcelos. On the occasion, the launch of the book will be announced: Pesticides – impacts on health and ecosystem balance, organized by Cíntia Teresinha Burhalde Mua and Leonardo Melgarejo, with a preface by Ingo Wolfgang Sarlet.
International authors
Praça da Alfândega will also welcome writers from eight different countries. Nina Brochmann and Ellen Stokken Dahl, Norwegian doctors, will arrive in the Capital for the chat “You thought you knew your body? Think again!”, on October 29; Eckhart Nickel, German writer, will bring the debate “when literature and visual arts find themselves in a love triangle”, on November 9; Giovanna Rivero, Bolivian writer, will bring more details about her book Terra fresco da sua tumba, an event in partnership with the Instituto Cervantes de Porto Alegre on November 1st.
Nicolás Ferraro, Argentinean, will participate in a chat about the current situation in Latin American detective literature on November 4th; Tereza Cárdenas, Cuban, will participate in a meeting on November 4th; Luis Santos, Uruguayan, will hold the chat “dialogues between Brazil and Uruguay”, on November 4; Joana Bértolo, Portuguese, will discuss literary cartographies on November 8th; and Faisal Al Suwaidi, from the United Arab Emirates, who will present his work Under the Wings of Angels on November 14.
