A two-year-old girl, who was abandoned by her parents, has lived at the University Hospital of Salamanca, in Spain, since she was 11 months old, as she suffers from an incurable disease that requires medical monitoring 24 hours a day.
The child, who is under the care of the Junta de Castilla y León, has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for more than a year, reports La Razón. Since that time, health professionals have treated her as “part of their own family”, as the head of the hospital’s pediatrics service told the same newspaper.
“The relationship they established with her is special and full of affection”, Eduardo Consuegra also revealed.
Despite limited mobility and greater propensity for respiratory illnesses, health professionals have tried to provide him with special moments. They made her a mermaid tail for her birthday and take her to the pool with her children whenever they can. Over time, they have also taken photographs and documented her life in the hospital so that, in the future, the girl will know how these two years went.
The greatest desire of the hospital’s doctors and nurses is for the child to find a family that will welcome them and Social Services are already working towards this end. According to Eduardo Consuegra, several families have already shown interest in adopting her, however, this is a process that will take longer than normal, since the girl’s illness is “lifelong and requires constant care”.
