Converse and Awake NY renew their partnership with the launch of a new collection made up of two One Star Pro models that fuse Awake NY’s New York aesthetic with Converse’s skateboarding tradition. Founded in 2012 by Angelo Baque, born in the New York borough of Queens, Awake NY is a reflection of the rich diversity characteristic of the city, capturing the spirit and sensitivity with collections inspired by the eclecticism that permeated downtown New York in the years 90.
The debut Converse x Awake NY line celebrates the skateboarding and alternative music scene that also flourished there at that time, coinciding with the period of Converse’s reintroduction to the market through One Star. The silhouette was quickly adopted and incorporated by alternative sports communities, who enjoyed the popularization of clothing and sneakers rescued from the 70s.
According to Baque, “One Star was always linked to punk and alternative artists from the 90s that I really admired, like Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins or Beastie Boys — music that is not normally associated with people from my background, nor the use of a One Star pair. If you used it, you were defying social norms.”
The Converse x Awake NY collection celebrates memories of a time when One Star meant boldness, and now offers it in two color options: black or blue. The Awake NY logo is embroidered on the side of the vintage suede upper, completing the look, as is the brand’s shared plaque on the back of the shoe. The talents starring in the campaign are R&B artist Yaya Bey and saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins.
The One Star Pro, a modern version of the One Star, was designed especially for skateboarders, providing great comfort on the board with impact cushioning thanks to the CONS traction rubber sole and CX molded insole, an exclusive Converse technology. The minimalist, low-top silhouette provides flexibility, while the rubber-lined upper extends durability.
