The biggest literary festival in the region had its opening ceremony this Friday (29), in Praça Dante Alighieri. With the theme “In Reading We Meet”, the heart of the city will be beating in the atmosphere of the 39th Caxias do Sul Book Fair until (10/15). In total, there will be 17 days of free activities, in the spaces of the Casa da Cultura, the Pedro Parenti Municipal Theater, the Dr. Demetrio Niederauer Municipal Public Library and the Gerd Bornheim Municipal Art Gallery.
The president of the Caxienses Booksellers Association, Maria Helena Lacava, opened the speeches at the literary festival saying that the most beautiful thing is to talk about books from the heart. “I, in 1988, at the opening of the Fair that year, tried to give a speech, but I got so nervous and forgot half of my speech. Since then, now I don’t prepare anything, I speak with my heart and I find it much easier, because words come from the soul and books are that, words from the soul”, highlighted Maria Helena, who at the end of her speech asked for a round of Congratulations to the bookseller Antônio Rossi, who passed away on the last day (06/09) and who participated in 38 editions of the Fair.
The Friend of the Book 2023, the pedagogue and storyteller, Aline Luz, turned her words into a story. “During the pandemic when we had to stay away from our loved ones, I created a project called Contos ao Telephone. People told me stories, they told me a little about their friends, their loved ones, and I chose the story, called the person and said: you were presented with the story on the phone. And I already knew the power of words. But I discovered that the word has a very light power. So today, as the Friend of the Book, I revere all storytellers, the tellers of written stories and narrated stories, because it was through them that today I know the true power of the word”, said Aline.
The Patron of the 39th Caxias do Sul Book Fair, Francisco Michielin, spoke in his speech about the emotion of being remembered. “I feel deeply moved, intensely grateful. But I have said this honor on other occasions that for me, above all, it is a reward for my generation. I am a fragment of my generation and, consequently, they are with me”, said the Patron when recalling the beginning of his career as a writer.
Cardiologist Dr. Michielin opened his heart, said that it was in Dante Square that his literary life began and today he opens the Literature Festival in the heart of the city. “The Square is public, it’s fun and it belongs to the people, and the book has to belong to the people. We want everyone to come to the square, whether they like books or not, but to come see, to come and absorb this whole atmosphere, as the Festival has already started”, said the Patron.
After the Patron’s speech, the Municipal Secretary of Culture, Cristina Nora Calcagnotto greeted everyone present, saying of the immense joy of being at the opening of the Book Fair and the value it has for Caxias do Sul. “Our main objective is to encourage reading, giving prominence to the book, to literature, to reading for all ages, for all people and social classes, with many cultural activities, dance, music, theater, visual arts, with all their forms of expression . Give people more reasons to get closer to reading”, said the secretary.
In her speech, Cristina Nora Calcagnotto announced the book collection campaign to restore libraries in cities affected by the floods. Donations can be delivered to the Department of Culture and at the Fair itself. The action has the support of the Superintendency of Penitentiary Services (Susepe).
Finally, ending the night’s speeches, Mayor Adiló Didomenico spoke about the importance of the Book Fair, a cultural landmark in the municipality. “The Fair transforms us every year, it is more than a simple meeting of readers, authors and booksellers. It is a space for discovery, learning and sharing knowledge. It is a powerful reminder that, regardless of our personal stories, literature has the power to unite us, inspire and enrich our lives”, highlighted the mayor, who added that books have the power to transport us to other perspectives and that in them we find answers to questions and an invitation to reflection.
And at 6:45 pm, the most anticipated moment, the doctor and writer Francisco Michielin, Patron of the 39th edition of the Caxias do Sul Book Fair and the Friend of the Book, Aline Luz, rang the bell opening the biggest literary party in Serra Gaúcha.
After the end of the protocol, the stage welcomed singer Tatiéli Bueno, who performed Tribute to Mercedes Sosa and moved the audience present. And at 8pm, at the Casa da Cultura, at the Gerd Bornheim Gallery, the opening of the exhibition “40 years of Radicci”, by Carlos Henrique Iotti, took place, who received the Caxias do Sul award, granted by the City Council of Councillors. The exhibition continues until (26/10).
The Fair will promote more than 300 attractions, such as autograph sessions, lectures, chats, music, theater and dance performances, in addition to the traditional sale of books at attractive prices in the Square, over 17 days.
