São Leopoldo experienced a morning of chaos this Tuesday, September 26th, due to the heavy rain that hit the city. According to Civil Defense, the volume of rain exceeded 60 millimeters in less than two hours, with 20 millimeters in just 15 minutes. The windy storm and the expressive volume in such a short space of time caused trees to fall, occasional flooding in streets and avenues, erosion and the suspension of health services.
With the heavy rains and the flooding of some streets, the basic health units: Trensurb, Santo André, Paim and Vicentina had their services suspended and the teams went to reinforce services in the other units.
Classes normally continue in the municipal network and each school is free to assess specific situations whether to maintain activities or not.
The level of Rio dos Sinos, at 4 pm, registered 4.58 meters in elevation on the measuring ruler installed on Rua da Praia, in the Rio dos Sinos neighborhood and Rua das Camélias, in the Pinheiro neighborhood, according to the Contingency Plan for Floods (Placon).
Summary of the provisions of the Contingency Plan:
- 3,50 metros – Observation
- 3,50 metros – Attention/Intensive Monitoring
- 4,30 metros + signs of elevation and/or forecast of new rains – Alert
- 4,50 metros – beginning of impact on Rua da Praia and Rua das Camélias (bottom of drainage).
- 5,10 metros – Alarm – start of reaching Alberto Ramos street – Feitoria/São Geraldo.
