New research published in the journal Nutrients found a relationship between high consumption of a mineral and cancer.
In the study (read this link), associations between the incidence of breast cancer and higher dietary phosphate intake were evaluated. When at lower levels (800-100 mg), there is a reduction in cancer risks. At higher levels (>1800mg), in turn, the risks would be increased considerably.
- January 8: Moraes opens virtual STF trial with vote for convictions ranging from 12 to 17 years in prison
- Government goes to the STF to ask to review the way of paying court orders and hopes to pay off R$95 billion
To reach this conclusion, 3,302 multiethnic American women between 42 and 52 years old were evaluated.
The team compared each case of breast cancer with four types of age-matched controls. The incidence of the disease was also measured between groups that were or were not exposed to phosphate.
The conclusion that drew attention was that exposure to levels above 1800 mg of daily phosphate increased the relative risk of breast cancer in relation to low intake of the mineral.
The authors add that more studies, with larger groups, are still needed.
It is worth remembering that ultra-processed foods can be rich in this substance. In the soft drink group, one can of cola would be enough to exceed the healthy daily phosphate intake.
This type of soft drink was the only one that exceeded the daily recommendation by three times. Increased phosphate intake may also be related to osteoporosis and chronic kidney disease.
