The Federal Senate is preparing to hold a public hearing, at the end of September, to discuss the need to regulate electronic cigarettes, also known as vapes, in the country. This initiative comes after a survey carried out by the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) revealed that around 20% of young Brazilians use these devices.
According to the UFPel study, the consumption of electronic cigarettes is more common among young people aged between 18 and 24 years old. However, it is important to highlight that, currently, there is no specific regulation for these products in Brazil, which leads to several risks for users.
The lack of regulation allows devices to enter the country without adequate control over the substances used in vapes. Furthermore, it also contributes to the existence of an underground market, where the quality and safety of products can be compromised.
The public hearing in the Federal Senate, which will take place in Brasília (DF), seeks to promote a broad and enlightening debate on the regulation of electronic cigarettes in Brazil. Anvisa informs that it is in the process of regulatory discussion about these devices, but will only release information about the process after its completion.
The expectation is that this hearing will be an important milestone for the definition of guidelines that guarantee the safety and health of vape consumers. Adequate regulation of these products can bring significant benefits, both for those seeking to abandon the smoking habit and for young people who are increasingly attracted to this practice.
