Caxias do Sul is one of the main tourist cities in Serra Gaúcha, with attractions that delight visitors. To enhance and publicize the municipality’s tourism potential, the Tourism Secretariat recognized on Friday (22/09) three personalities who stand out for their work in their areas and for the strong relationship they have with the city. Edson Antônio Tomiello, Gabriela Schwan and Greta Bachi received the title of tourism ambassador, joining other people appointed in previous years.
The role of tourism ambassadors
The title of tourism ambassador is an honor granted by the City of Caxias do Sul, through the Secretariat of Tourism, together with the Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Services, the Gastronomy and Hotel Business Union and the Municipal Tourism Council. The objective is to recognize people who represent Caxias do Sul, promoting its potential, especially tourism, and sensitizing other people to value, preserve and learn about its attractions. “This title is eternal, whoever receives it will always be connected with tourism in Caxias”, stated the Secretary of Tourism, Ricardo Daneluz.
The inauguration ceremony took place at Café Galópolis, one of the city’s historic sites, which is part of the Caminhos da Colônia route. Mayor Adiló Didomenico highlighted that Galópolis and Ana Rech are two communities that are already working hard to rescue and value the habits and customs of immigrants. He stated that the Administration is working to take this movement to other locations in the interior. “We need to explore the gastronomy, the landscape, the history, the customs of the ancestors, who were simple people. Showing simplicity, joy and involving tourists with these attractions are differentiators that we have for the development of the activity in Serra Gaúcha”, he defended.
The new tourism ambassadors
The inauguration of the new tourism ambassadors is part of Municipal Tourism Week, which continues until Tuesday (27). The activity aims to celebrate World Tourism Day, celebrated on September 27, and promote awareness about the importance of tourism for the city’s economic, social and cultural development.
Edson Antônio Tomiello
He began his professional activity as a bricklayer’s assistant, helping his father with civil works. He studied Business Administration at the University of Caxias do Sul and, for 12 years, worked at Marcopolo. In 1992, he created San Marino Indústria Metalúrgica and, in 1998, he bought a brand, starting the manufacture of buses, under the name Neobus, which he kept under his control until 2016.
In February 2020, he acquired a 25-hectare property, where he began construction of Villa Dei Troni, a tourist project aimed at recovering the real history of Italian immigration. “I’m going to leave something to the city that gave me a lot. It will be an Italian colony, with more than 50 works, within the urban area of Caxias do Sul”, he commented.
When citing the support that the Municipal Administration has given to tourism, he defended a movement for the resumption of the Hotel Bela Vista, in Ana Rech, one of the most important developments in regional tourism. For Tomiello, it is important to preserve the Master Plan for locations, such as Ana Rech and Galópolis, for the development of tourism.
Gabriela Schwan Poltronieri
The CEO of the Swan Hotéis chain in Brazil and CEO and founder of the Swan Portugal Collection has worked in the tourism sector for 24 years, managing hotels and hospitality. It is a pioneer in the implementation of quality processes, with ISO 9001 and PGQP certifications in the chain’s hotels in Rio Grande do Sul. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality from the University of Caxias do Sul, an MBA in Business Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas and a specialization in General Managers Program from Cornell University, New York. She is vice-president of Transforma RS, member of Nexo Governança Corporativa and advisor to Turistech Hub.
The ambassador commented that the Swan network began with a unit in Novo Hamburgo, where it remains, and extended to Porto Alegre, Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande and Canela, in addition to two operations in Portugal, in the Historic Center of Vila de Sintra. She highlighted that the units abroad are the result of seven restored houses, rescuing and valuing the local wealth. “Authenticity makes a difference”, she reinforced. She also said, without elaborating, for contractual reasons, that the network should have new features in Caxias do Sul next year.
Greta Bachi
Born and raised in Galópolis, the entrepreneur states that the village is a beautiful place, with many dreams and stories of Italian immigrants, constituting a small piece of paradise in Caxias do Sul. Her strong belief in tourism made her invest in restoration of an old historic building to create Café Galópolis. “I passed by the property every day, which was abandoned. Unsatisfied, I decided to invest in the space, preserving much of its structure. The bricks that appear here have beautiful stories,” she highlighted.
The project began operations in 2022 and currently receives an average of 1,500 to 2,000 people per weekend. Open daily, with a varied menu. Highlights include the sweet and savory cannolis, which have already become a regional reference. “I want to leave something to the city like the Italian immigrants did, who gave us opportunities like this. I want to contribute to tourism in Caxias do Sul, help to rescue the history and cultural richness, keeping them alive in people’s memories”, he stated.
