The city of São Leopoldo, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, is alert to the risk of isolated storms with heavy rain, hail, lightning and winds that can reach 90 km/h. The local Civil Defense released a weather report this Saturday morning, September 23rd, based on information from the Situation Room of the State Secretariat for the Environment (SEMA-RS).
According to the bulletin, a low pressure system, flow of humidity and passage of a cold front across the ocean accentuate the weather conditions and the high risk of disruption from heavy rains and storms in the coming days. There is also the possibility of persistent river flooding between the 23rd and 26th of September.
Rio dos Sinos rising
The Rio dos Sinos, which runs through the city of São Leopoldo, showed a slow rise in response to the latest rains. At 12:45 pm this Saturday, the river level marked 4.21m on the measuring stick installed on Rua da Praia. According to what was determined by the Civil Defense, 60mm of rain fell in the last 48 hours in the municipality. The accumulated rainfall in September is 362mm, exceeding the average for the period 30 years ago with 179mm.
The status in relation to Rio dos Sinos remains Attention, according to the Contingency Plan for Floods (Placon). If the river level exceeds 4.30m and there are signs of elevation and/or forecast of new rains, the status changes to Alert. If it reaches 4.50m, it will begin to reach the road of Rua da Praia and Rua das Camélias (bottom of the drainage). If it reaches 5.10m, it will start at Rua Alberto Ramos – Feitoria/São Geraldo.
The lowest level recorded in São Leopoldo in 2023 was 0.29m on 02/14/2023. The highest level recorded in São Leopoldo in 2023 was 6.18m on 06/19/2023.
Mayor determines duty of City Hall teams
The mayor of São Leopoldo Ary Vanazzi, based on warnings and alerts from the local and state Civil Defense meteorological systems, reinforced this morning the determination for all São Leopoldo City Hall teams to maintain their shifts, work with the flood containment system of Casas de Bombas, as well as monitoring the riverside communities of Rio dos Sinos.
Civil Defense advises the population to protect themselves from the heavy rains forecast for the next few days, avoiding floodable areas and open areas during storms. In case of emergency, residents can contact Civil Defense by calling (51) 2200-0202 or via WhatsApp (51) 99348-9581.
