World Cleanup Day, celebrated this Saturday (16), will have a special stage of the Cleaning of the Seas project, which aims to remove waste from the bottom and banks of the Perequê river, which divides the municipalities of Porto Belo and Itapema, in Santa Catarina. The initiative is promoted by the Brazilian Nautical Association (ACATMAR), Mundo Mar and Acquanauta Floripa, with the support of various entities and companies.
A way to contribute to a more sustainable world
The Cleaning the Seas project is officially part of World Cleanup Day, which brings together millions of volunteers, governments and organizations in 197 countries and territories. The aim is to tackle the global crisis of mismanaged waste and help create a new, more sustainable world. “This is another action to make people aware of how important the correct disposal of waste is and, mainly, for the local community, who live on the banks of the river and enjoy this nature”, says Michele Castilho, project coordinator.
The action will be held in three locations simultaneously – the Perequê beach resort, the mouth of the Perequê river and the Lagoa do Perequê Park. Volunteers can participate by diving in the river or cleaning the shores and beach. According to Leandro ‘Mané’ Ferrari, creator of the project and president of ACATMAR, the involvement of children is fundamental to the success of the initiative. “That’s why we insist on parallel awareness actions. During this week, the Cleaning of the Seas team will hold a lecture for students from municipal schools in the region”, he explains.
An honor to receive this important action
For Francis Pinheiro, President of the Porto Belo Environment Foundation (FAMAP), receiving the Cleaning of the Seas project is an honor. “The change begins in our homes and extends to the mouth of the Perequê River. And uniting the community to the event is very meaningful”, he says.
Registration to participate in the action is open and can be done free of charge via the website www.limpezadosmares.com.
Cleaning the Seas is an achievement of ACATMAR. Mundo Mar and Acquanauta Floripa and has the supporting sponsorship of Fort Atacadista.
