The Porto Alegre Public Market will host, between the 15th and 17th of September (Friday to Sunday), the traditional Porto Alegre Orchid Exhibition, with the participation of 30 orchid growers associations from Rio Grande do Sul. The event celebrates the beginning of Spring and the 154th anniversary of the Public Market, which recently started opening on Sundays.
Over the course of three days, the Círculo Gaúcho de Orquidófilos will set up a large garden in the Events Space of the Public Market, on the ground floor. The exhibition will feature around a thousand orchids on display, representing 200 species. The public will have the opportunity to appreciate rare species, learn about cultivation and purchase plants directly from producers. Visits, courses and lectures have free entry.
In this edition, the species honored will be the Cattleya Intermedia orchid, which blooms in spring. It is a plant native to Rio Grande do Sul, with large flowers (9x9cm) and very varied shape and color details. It is a resistant plant, developing well under various temperature conditions.
Another highlight of the exhibition are the micro-orchids, plants in which the flower is up to 1.5cm and the plant is up to 7cm. “Interest in growing this type of orchid has grown, due to the ease of cultivation in small spaces”, highlights the president of the Círculo Gaúcho de Orquidófilos (CGO), Carlos Chiaradia. The program features a lecture by Roberto Martins, an orchid grower from São Paulo, specialized in micro-orchid cultivation and indoor cultivation management techniques.
There will also be competition between exhibitors, with 56 categories. Under evaluation will be genetics, beauty, shape and color, among other qualities. The award trophy honors the 154 years of Mercado Público.
This is the second exhibition in a calendar of three, promoted by the CGO annually. The exhibitions aim to provide information and exchange of knowledge to connoisseurs. “The event is also an opportunity for orchid lovers to get to know the CGO and know that there is an entity open to the public, available to provide information about cultivation and species for free, we want to expand the network”, highlights Chiaradia.
It is important to highlight that orchid cultivation is also an economic activity in the municipality. It is estimated that in the rural area of Porto Alegre alone, more than 400,000 orchids are commercially cultivated. Furthermore, orchids have great potential for integration into the urban landscaping of cities, since they are perennial plants, in which nature itself is responsible for their subsistence.
