The passage of an extratropical cyclone through the southern region of Brazil on the 12th and 13th of July caused damage in several cities, including Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul. According to Pelotas City Hall, around 180,000 customers were left without electricity and 62 homes were partially roofless by the strong wind. A family had to leave their home in the south of the city, after the Civil Defense found serious structural damage to the residence.
In addition to homes, the cyclone also affected public buildings such as schools, health clinics and bus stops. According to the City Hall survey, damage was recorded in 34 elementary schools and 15 kindergarten schools, two Basic Health Units (UBSs), two Social Assistance Secretariat facilities and five shelters at bus stops. Municipal teams are already working on repairing the damage.
Normalized water supply in most regions
The cyclone also caused problems in the water supply in some regions of the city, due to the interruption of electricity in Water Treatment Stations and reservoirs. According to the Pelotas Autonomous Sanitation Service (SANEP), the situation is back to normal in virtually all regions, with the exception of the Laranjal and Prazeres resort reservoirs.
SANEP informed that it is carrying out maneuvers to meet the demand for supply in these regions through the R8 reservoir, located on Rua Mário Peiruque, in Areal. Therefore, there may still be fluctuations in Areal, Laranjal and Prazeres resort until the electricity is completely restored. In the Moradas 2 condominium, some fluctuation in supply during the day may also be registered.
Roads and accesses cleared after falling trees and bridges
Heavy rains and winds also caused disruption to roads in the interior of the municipality. According to the Rural Development Secretariat, the main roads are all cleared and should be patrolled as soon as weather conditions allow. According to a consolidated survey this Sunday (16), five secondary bridges – which have alternative routes – will need maintenance.
Access to Colonia de Pescadores Z3 is free from repairs on the right side of the bridge. The left side will receive the necessary maintenance later this week. Regarding access to Pontal da Barra, in Laranjal, the Secretariat for Urban Services and Infrastructure (Sssui) explains that access has already received the necessary maintenance so that it can be used by the population. The head of Ssui, Fábio Suanes, says that next week the site should receive definitive repairs.
The Municipality of Pelotas set up a standby service to respond to possible occurrences resulting from the storm. Teams from the Urban Services and Infrastructure, Environmental Quality, Works and Paving, Rural Development, Traffic and Transport and SANEP departments are mobilized to restore essential services to the population. The Secretariat of Social Assistance is also prepared to provide shelter, clothing and food for families that may be affected by the cyclone.
