Refusal to take a breathalyzer test
The Municipality of Santa Maria, through the Department of Urban Mobility, carried out another edition of Operation Balada Segura on Saturday night (15) and early Sunday (16). The purpose of the action is to curb the use of alcoholic beverages by drivers and prevent traffic accidents. The barriers were set up on sections of Rua Serafim Valandro and Avenida Hélvio Basso.
Of the 98 vehicles approached, seven drivers refused to take the breathalyzer test, known as the breathalyzer test, and were fined in accordance with the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). Refusal to take the test is considered a very serious infraction, with a fine of BRL 2,934.70 and suspension of the right to drive for 12 months.
“We found a high number of drivers refusing to take the breathalyzer test. Everyone knows that the equipment is used in this type of Operation and shows the level of alcohol in the body. It is known that if the driver drives after drinking alcohol, he is breaking the law, and putting his life and other people at risk. Attention and care in traffic is everyone’s responsibility. If you drink, don’t drive, use other means or ask for a ride”, reinforces the Traffic Superintendent, Alexandre Brondani Carvalho.
Legal Vehicle
In this operation, two vehicles with expired licensing were also approached, and the option to pay the debts through the banking application was offered, as provided for in State Law 55.514/2020 called Legal Vehicle and regulation by Decree 55.735/2021. The two drivers chose to pay on the spot, and the administrative removal measure was not applied.
Also during the Operation, a driver was caught driving the vehicle without a National Driver’s License (CNH), and penalties were applied in accordance with the CTB.
This weekend’s Operation Balada Segura was carried out by the Traffic and Urban Mobility Coordination (CTMU), with support from the Military Brigade.

- Vehicles addressed: 98
- Total fines: 24
- Indicted for refusal: 7
