Next Sunday, August 6th, Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana (CCMQ) will host the third edition of Samba do Quintana, an event created to promote samba culture and value local artists. From 4 pm, on Travessa Rua dos Cataventos, in front of the bar Térreo, the public will have the opportunity to watch free presentations by Edu Meirelles and Thiago Ribeiro & Amigos, the project’s resident group. Under the curatorship of journalist and music researcher Bruna Paulin, the event seeks to offer a space for audience and scene formation, allowing musicians to perform both classics of the genre and their own compositions.
Promoting local culture and scene
Samba do Quintana has stood out for offering a free and accessible activity to all audiences, in addition to providing artists with a space to promote their authorial work. Inspired by composers’ promotion nights at traditional samba houses, such as Beco do Rato, in Rio de Janeiro, the project seeks to reaffirm the cultural and democratic character of Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana. The director of CCMQ, Germana Konrath, emphasizes the importance of a samba on the street to expand the inclusion of music in everyday life and reinforce the institution’s commitment to being open to all audiences.
unmissable presentations
Samba do Quintana’s resident band, Thiago Ribeiro & Amigos, is made up of talented musicians, including Thiago Ribeiro on vocals and cavaquinho, Fernando Duarte on hand repeat, tambourine and bongo, Marcelo Rossi on guitar, Paulo Wolff on tambourine, carillon and rattles, and Rogério Menezes on tantan. Thiago Ribeiro, with musical influences such as Fundo de Quintal, Jovelina Pérola Negra, Zeca Pagodinho and other local and national artists, brings in his repertoire both classics and his own compositions. After 19 years of career, Thiago is recording his first single from his debut album.
This edition’s guest artist is Edu Meirelles, known for his versatility as a guitar player and singer-songwriter. Scheduled for release in 2024, his second album, entitled “Terreiro no meu Quintal”, presents his mandingas, visions and references. Meirelles is recognized in the Rio Grande do Sul music scene for his work as an instrumentalist, having integrated projects by renowned artists. During Samba do Quintana, he will present a series of new songs that will be part of his new album, currently in the recording process.
The project’s curator and programmer, Bruna Paulin, is an artist, journalist and music researcher with 21 years of experience. In addition to curating projects and producing content in the music field, she is the creator and presenter of the podcast “A História do Disco”, one of the most listened programs on Spotify Brazil.
