A visual celebration of Azorean heritage on Santa Catarina Island
Florianópolis is getting ready to host a unique photographic exhibition that seeks to honor and expand the Azorean culture present on the island. The collective show entitled “The Azorean Culture present on the Island of Santa Catarina – Santo Antônio and Sambaqui” will present works by 21 photographers, whether professionals or amateurs, at the renowned Espaço Cultural Câmara Criativa, located in the heart of the city center. The opening of the event is scheduled for Friday, July 14th, at 7:30 pm, and will count on the presence of the talented lace makers from Sambaqui. Access to the exhibition will be completely free.
A collaboration between the Creative Camera School of Photography and Art and Casa dos Açores, with the participation of lace makers from the Associação do Bairro de Sambaqui, Casarão and Engenho dos Andrade, the exhibition aims to expand and value the Azorean culture on the Island of Santa Catherine.
According to Radilson Carlos Gomes, curator of the exhibition, along with Amauri Fausto, more than 2 million people from Santa Catarina are descendants of Azoreans. Gomes points out that “through photographic language, images capable of portraying this culture that is so significant for the coast of Santa Catarina will be presented. All of the photographs in the exhibition were captured during a photo outing recently organized by the school.”
The 21 talented photographers participating in the exhibition are: Adriana Cardoso, Alfredo Tubúrcio, Ângela Tresinari, Cecília Heckrath, Cristiane Stela, Eduardo Machado Schiller, Fernanda Vieira, Guilherme Cardozo, Jaqueline Lauer, Karina Aliano, Karine Arend, Leila Dutra, Leiliane Vieira, Marco Alfredo Sardi, Maurício Roberto da Silva, Roberto Alvarenga, Sérgio Giron, Simone Prieto, Susan Hahm, Tania Gonçalves and Valentina Ducker.
