Researchers at the University of Kyoto, Japan, are going to start testing a new drug on humans that makes teeth grow back. The drug showed good results in rodents and, if it works in volunteers, it could start being marketed in 2030.
The main objective is to help patients who have anodontia, that is, they have none of their teeth since birth due to a genetic disorder.

The condition is more common in women, and the main treatment currently is the use of dentures.
Scientists managed to find a formula to suppress the action of the USAG-1 gene, which limits tooth growth.
“The idea of growing teeth is every dentist’s dream. We hope to pave the way for the clinical use of the drug”, say the researchers, in an interview with the Japanese newspaper Mainichi.
