In the year of Serpenti’s 75th anniversary, Bulgari presents a collection of six handbags. Serpenti in Art is born out of collaboration with three contemporary artists, who have lent their creative vision to enrich the Bulgari snake. An infinite evolution that reaches the virtual dimension of NFTs for the first time, opening up to a unique digital experience, accessible only through the exchange.
Famous for his symbolic dodo birds, representing the pursuit of freedom and happiness, Korean painter Sunwoo Kim has brought his artistic universe to the center of the Serpenti Forever Top Handle bag.
An emblem of timeless elegance and versatility, the bag comes with two different animations. The Day version features an imaginary forest with green leaves embossed on the calfskin body, enhancing the three-dimensional effect and dynamic texture of the image. A playful delight is hidden beneath the top flap, where a playful dodo peeks out amidst fanciful foliage, while the snake’s head clasp is featured in a rich green enamel palette and complemented by black onyx eyes.
The Night version is an immersion in a nocturnal landscape, studded with Bulgari’s iconic eight-pointed stars. As if chasing her dreams, the symbolic dodo bird flies in the blue sky illuminated by gold glitter details and embroidery appliqués. Adding a sparkle to the bag, a mesmerizing serpent’s head clasp features the so-called ‘diamond cut’ effect – consisting of a grainy metallic texture that shimmers like snow-set pavé – as well as hypnotic lapis lazuli eyes.
Multitalented Chinese artist Zhou Li—ranging from painting to sculpture through installations and public art—reimagines Serpenti Forever Top Handle bags through the distinctive language of her lyrical abstract paintings.
Named Ocean, after the image it evokes, the first creation is inspired by the artist’s series of paintings, Landscape of Nowhere: Water and Dreams, which focuses on the theme of freedom and hope for humanity. The combination of blue and pink tones, as well as Zhou Li’s exquisite brush strokes, gain new life on the bag’s calf leather body, creating a dreamlike universe.
Inspired by another famous series by the artist, called Spring, the second interpretation, Forest, celebrates the power of nature and its infinite circle of life. Evocative symbolism and references to Chinese landscape paintings mingle with the romantic atmosphere of the forest, while a wealth of detailing gives character to the calfskin bag with golden embroidery and precious appliqués, resulting in a variety of textures.
Both are adorned by a serpent’s head clasp with enameled scales, as well as matching gemstone inlays – malachite for one bag and rose quartz for the other. Resulting from the creative encounter between the art of Zhou Li and Bulgari, the bags also feature a metal handle in a geometric effect and gold mirrored finishes.
The completely reimagined design derives from artist installation Metamorphosis – The Ring of Life and celebrates the serpent as a symbol of the union between Chinese and European cultures, reason and vitality, metal and gemstones, Art Nouveau and Minimalism.
US-based artist Sophie Kitching applied her conceptual approach to two animations of the Top Handle Serpenti Forever bag. Focusing on the duality of the serpent and its infinite power of transformation, the artist experiments with opposing elements such as day and night, inside and outside.
As a work of art from his painting series, Invisible Green features the same myriad of colors, petals and leaves on a white calfskin background. Reminiscent of the serpent’s seductive scales, the lively, evocative features culminate in the iconic snake’s head clasp adorned with multicolored enamel inserts in matching hues.
Motifs inspired by nature also give life to the artist’s second design. Here, the mesmerizing contrast between intense colors and the black calfskin background, inspired by Sophie’s painting Nocturne, alludes to the serpent’s mysterious shapes and metamorphosis.
Exclusive creations dedicated to art lovers and Serpenti Bulgari enthusiasts were unveiled at Bulgari’s Serpenti in Art event as part of Haute Couture week in Paris. And as a collection born to celebrate an icon’s 75th birthday, each bag comes in a limited run of 75 pieces.
