Tampinha Legal, the largest socio-environmental program of an educational nature in circular economy initiated by the plastic transformation industry in Latin America, closed the first half of 2023 with a new record: 131 tons of plastic caps collected from more than 3,200 collection points across the country. This number represents an increase of 34% compared to the half-yearly average of recent years, which was 98 tons.
The collected material is sold to the industry and transformed into new plastic artifacts, such as buckets and pots, following the circular economy concept. In addition, the amount obtained from the sale is fully allocated to the assistance entities registered in the program, which use the resources to purchase medicines, equipment, food, among others.
According to Simara Souza, manager of the SustenPlást Institute, responsible for Tampinha Legal, the growth of the program reflects the change in society’s behavior in relation to the correct disposal of plastic. “Awareness is happening and the program is proof of that. Collecting plastic caps is such a grandiose act that we know it’s only a matter of time before the numbers increase even more. We will continue with all our work, always aiming at the economic, social and environmental contribution”, she said.
Since the beginning of the program, in 2017, more than 1,180 tons of plastic lids have been collected and more than R$2.9 million have been allocated to participating charities. Currently, Tampinha Legal is present in Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Bahia, Goiás and the Federal District.
