After confirmation by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) that a woman from Paraná died in May of swine flu, the case will be investigated in the United States. The goal is to identify possible mutations of the virus to understand how the patient was infected.
Brazilian tests confirmed that the 42-year-old victim had the Influenza A (H1N1) virus. Now the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) will make a new round to obtain other information.
The virus found in the woman appears to be similar to other H1N1 viruses found in Brazil between 2021 and 2022. In no case, including this one, was there transmission of the disease directly between humans, which would be a riskier scenario for the spread of the disease.

Protocol
WHO protocols require that all cases of human infection with swine flu be observed, these cases have been monitored since 2009, when there was a global pandemic of H1N1 and about 500,000 people died around the world.
“Based on currently available information, WHO considers this a sporadic case, with no evidence of person-to-person transmission of this event. The likelihood of human-to-human community spread and/or human-to-human spread of disease internationally is low.”said the international organization in a note.
According to Fiocruz, the victim had a recent history of cancer and lived close to a pig farm. No person close to her had the virus in the tests performed.
symptoms and treatment
Swine flu usually occurs in people who have had contact with infected pigs. The most common symptoms include fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, cough, runny nose, sore throat, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.
Treatment is with common anti-flu drugs, which help to contain the symptoms, and with the isolation of the infected person to avoid contamination of other people and surfaces.
