The Funarte Circulation and Diffusion of Dance Award – 2022, promoted across the country by the National Arts Foundation (Funarte), includes 30 projects for the circulation of dance shows. One of these projects is “Karma”, conceived, directed and performed by Rodolfo Lorandi and Maria Claudia Reginato, representing Santa Catarina, where the couple lives and works in Florianópolis. The performance, created in 2015, is based on partnership, ballroom and contemporary dances, and covers Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. With free tickets, the presentations in Porto Alegre will take place from tomorrow, the 22nd, at 4 pm, at the Esefid Scenic Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), in Jardim Botânico. There will also be a performance at 10am on Friday the 23rd, and on Saturday the 24th, at 8pm, it will be possible to watch it at Espaço n – Estúdio de Dança, in Cidade Baixa.
The project aims to promote interaction and dialogue after the performances, providing free access to different audiences. After circulating through 11 cities in six Brazilian states (Santa Catarina, Paraná, Amazonas, Pernambuco, Rondônia and Acre), participating in an online exhibition and receiving a virtual diffusion award, the show accumulates a total of 32 stagings and reaches hundreds of people across the country. “Karma” – Circulação Sul (2023) marks the end of the cycle of this work, which is directly linked to Lorandi’s doctoral research in the Graduate Program in Performing Arts (PPGAC) at Udesc.
As for the concept of the work and the resumption of circulation, Lorandi states: “With space for the occurrence, interested in everything that crosses a choreographic moment of the past, it does not matter if the movement was executed correctly, but the proposal to discover what that movement desired in us, engraved in our bodies. Why do we repeat and what remains in these bodies? What are these timeless bubbles that guide us on stage? The creation, sensitive to the public and intimate-collective issues, was influenced by the work of astrobiologist Carl Sagan, Buddhist and indigenous philosophies, theories about multiverses or individualization on stage, concerns about identity and gender, texts by writers Jorge Luiz Borges and Erin Manning , our movements and choreographies (or what we remember of them), the trajectory with Grão Cia. of Dance and many, many affections and visions of the world”.
In turn, dancer Maria Claudia Reginato describes “Karma” as an experience. She says, “Experience creates memory, memory creates imagination and desire, and desire creates new karma.” She points out that “karma” is the word used to represent the dance in this work, “a dance of never-equal beginnings, a presentation about ourselves and a dialogue about you”.
