Chinese authorities are on alert in the face of the advance of the XXB subvariant of Omicron, which should, in the coming weeks, substantially increase the number of people infected with Covid-19. The government says the number of weekly cases could reach 65 million by the end of June.
The increase comes six months after the country dismantled its infrastructure to deal with Covid-19 and amid an attempt to revive the economy.

The Covid-19 numbers were revealed by epidemiologist and pulmonologist Zhong Nanshan, at a medical conference this week.
The wave of infections, according to the expert, began at the end of April and was “anticipated”. Nanshan’s modeling now shows 40 million weekly cases.
In January of this year, the chief epidemiologist of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China had stated that about 80% of the country’s population, which has 1.4 billion inhabitants, had already been infected in that previous wave.
The government will have two new vaccines, which received preliminary approval and focus precisely on the subvariant that is causing the increase in cases.
