The next concert by the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (OSPA), a foundation linked to the State Secretariat for Culture (Sedac-RS), will present two great exponents of romanticism in its repertoire.
On May 27, at 5 pm, maestro Raphael Haeger will make his debut with OSPA, who will interpret “Burlesca, TrV 145” by Richard Strauss, with solos by Gustavo Carvalho on the piano, and “Symphony nº 1, ‘Titã’ ” by Gustav Mahler. Before the presentation, at 4 pm, flutist and professor Leonardo Winter will give a lecture in the “Concert Notes” series, approaching the life and work of the composers.
Richard Strauss (1864 – 1949) was only 21 years old when he composed the “Scherzo in D Minor for Piano and Orchestra”. For its premiere in 1890, the work was renamed “Burlesque”. Approximately 20 minutes long, this composition honors the composer’s mentor, pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow.
According to Raphael Haeger, “Burlesca” has dark abysses with dangerous surprises, delusional fantasies, witty chases and intoxicating scenes of desire. The maestro has already conducted original music by Richard Strauss for the silent film “The Knight of the Rose” at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden and at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. For this concert, the renowned Brazilian pianist Gustavo Carvalho will join the Orchestra. He made his first appearance with OSPA in 2002, conducted by Isaac Karabtchevsky.
Six months after the premiere of “Burlesca”, Gustav Mahler (1860 – 1911) presented his “Symphony Titan” for the first time. This work became a reference of romanticism and is one of the most celebrated symphonic pieces in the history of music. Its multiplicity of references goes through folklore songs and dances, military fanfares, the music of Viennese cafes, the chirping of birds during a morning walk, flashbacks, premonitions, wars, among other scenarios.
The “Sinfonia ‘Titã’” was the name of the opening concert of OSPA’s 2022 season, conducted by maestro Evandro Matté. Raphael Haeger highlights the challenges of performing this symphony with excellence, mentioning that it is a wonderful task to make this vast and diverse panorama resonate as a coherent construction.
