According to the quarterly balance of the Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers (Abrasce), based on data from the Cielo Retail Index in Shopping Centers (ICVS-Abrasce), the shopping center sector had a 6.8% increase in sales in the first quarter of 2023.
Compared to the pre-pandemic period, there was an increase of 0.3% compared to the same period in 2019. The regions with the highest increases were the Midwest and Northeast, followed by the Southeast, South and North. The actual variation in average sales per m² was 6.6%. The categories of stores that had the greatest variations were Convenience and Services, Entertainment and Food.
The number of visitors to malls continued to increase, further stimulating commerce within them. In the first quarter of 2023, the flow of people in shopping centers was 13.2% higher than in the same period of the previous year.
In March, malls grew by 2.4% compared to March 2022. The average ticket in malls was R$ 128.91 and in high street stores it was R$ 84.10. The flow of visitors increased by 8% compared to the same period of the previous year.
In the assessment of the president of the Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers (Abrasce), Glauco Humai, the increase in the number of visitors and the good monthly results of sales volume in the surveyed regions lead to the conclusion that the shopping center sector is rapidly approaching the pre-pandemic level. “Among the external factors that contributed to growth in the first quarter of this year are lower inflationary pressures on industrialized goods, such as clothing at the beginning of the year, and advances in real labor income. The result represents an acceleration compared to the previous quarter, which had been impacted by macroeconomic factors, such as political uncertainties, higher interest rates and pressures on the family budget, which limited further advances in general economic activity”, comments the executive.
